8-year cold case solved: Killers tracked down using phone technology

ESTERO, Fla. -- A double murder that remained unsolved for nearly a decade has finally been closed, as two men are now serving life sentences for the execution-style killings of a married couple. The victims were lured to Southwest Florida under the pretense of a gun sale, a trap that led to their deaths in 2016.

For eight years, the case grew cold. Detectives had few leads and no clear suspects in the brutal slayings. The break came when investigators revisited the evidence using advanced cell phone tracking technology. By analyzing historical location data from towers near the crime scene, they were able to place the two suspects at the remote location where the couple was killed.

The victims had traveled to meet someone they believed was selling a firearm. Instead, they were ambushed and shot. The killers then vanished, leaving no witnesses behind. The case was only revived when forensic analysts matched the phone data to the suspects' movements on the night of the murder.

Both men were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The families of the victims expressed relief that justice was finally served, though they noted the long wait only deepened their grief. The case stands as a testament to how digital evidence can breathe new life into investigations that have stalled.
