MSU uses 3D mapping technology and AI for forest management

Michigan State University researchers are turning to advanced 3D mapping and artificial intelligence to revolutionize how forests are managed. The project, led by Professor Dave Carter, uses aerial scans to create highly detailed digital models of woodlands, allowing scientists to simulate growth patterns and predict the impact of environmental changes.

Traditional forest management often relies on ground-level surveys and historical data, which can miss subtle variations in tree health and terrain. Carter's team uses LiDAR technology mounted on aircraft to capture millions of data points, building a precise three-dimensional picture of the canopy and understory. This data feeds into AI algorithms that analyze tree density, species distribution, and carbon storage capacity.

The system can run simulations for different management scenarios, such as selective logging or wildfire prevention. "We can ask the AI what a forest will look like in 30 years under different conditions," Carter said. "It helps us make decisions that balance timber production with conservation." The technology also identifies areas vulnerable to disease or drought, enabling targeted interventions before problems spread.

MSU plans to expand the project to include private landowners and state agencies, offering a cost-effective way to monitor large tracts of land. While the initial focus is on Michigan's northern forests, the approach could be adapted for ecosystems worldwide. Carter emphasized that the goal is not to replace human foresters but to give them better tools for stewardship. "This is about using data to see the forest for the trees," he added.
