Shake Shack says tech glitch explains viral no-tip video

Shake Shack is speaking out after a customer's receipt from one of its airport stands sparked a heated online debate. The company says a technology malfunction, not a change in policy, is behind the confusing charge that appeared to include a mandatory tip.

The incident came to light when a traveler posted a video showing a receipt from a Shake Shack location inside an airport. The receipt listed a service charge that the customer claimed was labeled as a tip, and the video quickly spread across social media. Many viewers were upset, assuming the chain had quietly added a gratuity without asking.

In a statement, Shake Shack clarified that the issue was a glitch in the point-of-sale system at that specific licensed location. The company explained that the airport branch is operated by a partner, not by Shake Shack directly, and that the software error caused the tip line to appear as a fixed charge. They stressed that tipping at Shake Shack remains voluntary and that the system has since been corrected.

The company also said it has reached out to the customer to apologize and offer a refund. While the video raised questions about transparency in airport dining, Shake Shack insists this was a one-off technical failure, not a new business practice. The chain reiterated its commitment to clear pricing and said it is working with the airport operator to prevent similar mistakes in the future.
