Google brings its age-assurance technology to Android developers worldwide

Google is rolling out its Play Age Signals API to Android developers around the world, offering a new method for apps to estimate user age without collecting sensitive personal data. The technology, previously available in a limited test, allows developers to request age-range information directly from Google Play's own signals. Instead of asking for a birth date or scanning an ID, the API uses machine learning and account data to classify users into broad groups like "under 18," "18-24," or "over 25."

The move is designed to help app makers comply with growing child safety regulations, such as the UK's Age Appropriate Design Code and similar laws in other regions. By relying on Google's infrastructure, developers can avoid building their own age-gating systems, which often require storing private information. Google emphasizes that the system is privacy-first: the API returns only an age bucket, not a specific date of birth, and the data is processed on the device whenever possible.

For users, this means apps can automatically adjust content filters, parental controls, or marketing preferences without intrusive verification steps. A teenager opening a social app, for example, might see stricter privacy defaults by default. The rollout covers all developers using Google Play's console, though the actual age estimates depend on whether a user has a Google account with sufficient activity history. Google says the system improves over time as it learns from patterns, but it remains optional for developers who prefer their own verification methods.
